At this time of year most of our news concerns the garden. It’s one long run of sowing vegetable seeds and protecting them from all the hungry critters out there – the slugs, rabbits, mice, squirrels and pigeons.
We believe it’s better to find ways to protect plants from munchers rather than opting for poisons, so we don’t use slug pellets or nematodes, or any insecticides at all. In the beds we practise companion planting to deter ‘predators’ – with, I must say, variable results but each year we are learning more.
In the meantime we’ve surrounded the veg beds with chicken-wire to protect them from rabbits.
